[ARCHIVED] Waterfowl for Warriors

WFW Logo

The WFW hunting program was established in 2013 as a means to thank Veterans and military service members for their service and sacrifice by providing an organized waterfowl hunting experience. The program was started by volunteers and is fully supported by the City of Anoka. Since 2013, WFW has offered at least 4 coordinated hunts annually serving 16 Veterans at each hunt.  In 2020, there will be 5 scheduled Waterfowl for Warrior hunts in October and November.

In 2017, WFW began hosting a mentored youth waterfowl hunt on MN DNR Youth Waterfowl Day for children/grandchildren of Veterans/military service members providing opportunities for 12-15 youth to learn about the sport while hunting side by side with a mentor.  This year, the city will be offering two Youth Waterfowl for Warrior hunting activities in September.  The City received a No Child Left Inside grant from the MN DNR to assist with the delivery of this program. Funds were awarded for the purchase of blinds, decoys and other field supplies needed to host the hunts. In the past, these items were supplied by volunteers.

Hunting will take place 1/2 hour before sunrise and end at about noon on each program date. The program is held rain or shine as long as there is no lightning. Following the hunt, participants enjoy a grilled lunch at the pavilion. This program is held at the Anoka Nature Preserve, 4301 Parkview Lane, Anoka.

Waterfowl for Warrior merchandise is available for purchase at Anoka City Hall Public Services Dept. Funds generated from the sales of these items pays for the cost of the lunch following the hunt.
The program is also supported by many local companies and organizations including Vista Outdoor / Federal Premium Ammunition, The Weaver Brothers Company, Big Dog Duck Calls, The Anoka American Legion, and Beavertail / DOA Decoys.
