Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
Overview
The City of Anoka and Anoka Municipal Utility (AMU) have chosen to upgrade the aging Electric and Water metering systems with the latest Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology. In addition to modernizing our metering system, we have experienced growing customer expectations. Customers are seeking enhanced technology and information from their utility provider, such as usage patterns and leak notifications. There is no cost to the property owner for the new meter or its installation.
The installation of the new smart meters will begin in early Summer of 2025 with a small pilot area in Anoka. Installation will continue for all other AMU service locations in late 2025 until the project is complete. Details and updates will be available through our website, social media posts, and customer mailings.
Wesco, our third-party vendor, will be the ones swapping out AMI meters. Their crew will be easy to spot- they'll be wearing AMU Contractor logo-emblazoned vans and Anoka ID badges.
Coming In October!
Replacement of the aging electric and water meters with AMI meters will start in October 2025 in Anoka & Ramsey and progress to surrounding areas through 2027.
What is Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), you may ask?
AMI is an integrated system facilitating two-way communication between AMU and our customers. AMI collects, stores, analyzes, and presents energy and water data that enable AMU and our customers to better understand how and when electricity and water are being used. This information may identify opportunities to reduce energy and water costs.
Benefits of Utilizing AMI:
- Eliminates manual meter readings and may reduce the number of estimated bills.
- In the event of a power outage, AMI meters notify Anoka Municipal Utility – enabling a faster response time.
- If water meter data indicates excessive water usage, possibly signifying a leak, AMU can notify the customer in a more timely manner, reducing wasted water and lowering costs.
- Enables remote connections and disconnections of electric service, potentially expediting service reconnections.
- Helps customers manage their energy and water consumption more effectively. The system will allow customers to view their usage and consumption online, identify and address high bills, and save money by analyzing their usage patterns.
- Helps AMU better understand and plan for customer demand of solar systems, electric vehicles EV’s, renewable energy, and energy-efficiency requirements.
